Clashes Erupt Outside New Jersey Immigration Detention Center During Protest

(MENAFN) Demonstrations outside the Delaney Hall immigration detention center in Newark, New Jersey, turned confrontational late Saturday as protesters and police clashed during a gathering focused on US immigration enforcement policies, according to reports.

More than 200 people reportedly assembled near the facility throughout the day, including both critics and supporters of immigration enforcement measures. Tensions escalated after some demonstrators pushed against metal barriers surrounding the detention center.

According to reports, New Jersey State Police officers wearing riot gear responded by deploying tear gas and moving to disperse the crowd. Mounted police units were later brought in as the situation intensified.

Authorities said some protesters threw rocks and bottles at officers, while others encouraged demonstrators to comply with police instructions. A fire was also reportedly set in the roadway outside the facility during the unrest.

The confrontation occurred despite earlier calls for calm from New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill. Defending the deployment of state police, Sherrill described the measure as “absolutely necessary” and urged people traveling from outside New Jersey not to contribute to disorder.

The protests followed several days of demonstrations at the detention center. Earlier in the week, reports indicated that US Senator Andy Kim was pepper-sprayed by immigration agents during a separate protest at the site.

Delaney Hall has also faced criticism from some detainees, who have reportedly launched a hunger strike over concerns about food quality and access to medical care.

The Trump administration has rejected those allegations and has accused some protesters of engaging in assaults on law enforcement officers and other forms of disruptive behavior, according to reports.
